University of Rochester Neighborhood

There are several different neighborhoods surrounding the University of Rochester that are quite diverse. If possible, it would be best to drive around the area to get a sense of where you want to be. Our house is less than a 15-minute walking distance to the campus in an area that is generally quiet and safe.

The neighborhood actually consists of only a few historic streets that are bound on all sides by Highland Park, South Ave, Elmwood Ave, and Mt. Hope. On Mt. Hope, only one block away and closest to the U of R campus, there is a busy retail corridor with popular restaurants. This part of Mt. Hope is also undergoing a revitalization effort initiated by the U of R. Given the name “College Town,” this area is already having a positive impact on the immediate area. To the north, one block up South Ave toward Highland Ave is the world famous Highland Park. Every May, since 1898, the Park and County have hosted the Rochester Lilac Festival, aptly named for the time of year when its many (over 1,200) sweet smelling lilac bushes are in bloom.
